The moon was in its last quarter, but still spread a little light over the street at midnight, though even with the help of the low powered street lamps it was hard to see the outline of the figure sitting in the driver’s seat of the dark car outside the single story house. The shaded flashlight shone on the small wax figure that sat on the passenger seat, a lock of gray hair pressed into the crude representation of the head, and red painted markings covering the body. The gloved hands picked up the little manikin, held it up to the mouth and frosty breath covered it. Four words were pronounced in an ancient language, and then the whispered instructions. “Come to me, Jed. I am waiting for you. Come with me. You know where we must go. It is time. You need not wake. Just come.”

It was two minutes later that the front door opened and the old man, clad only in pajamas, started to totter out towards the car. He stared straight ahead of him and walked hesitatingly forward, but never stumbled. He reached the car, and the passenger door was opened for him. He got in without a sound. The whispering continued.

“No need to wake. No need at all. Not yet, there will be time for that soon. We need to go now, Jed. Sit back, it’s very nearly time.”

The gloved hand reached inside the old man’s pajama pocket and left what needed to be there. Then the car moved forward and headed south, towards The Tracks.
